In 1957, a new Heilongjiang Provincial Library was planned in Harbin, and the new library officially opened in May 1962. In October 2003, a new building was completed on Changjiang Road in the Nangang district of Harbin.
As of January 2017, the Heilongjiang Provincial Library covers a building area of 33,000 square meters and provides more than 2,000 reading seats. It employs 193 staff members and has 17 departments. The library holds over 3.51 million items in its collection, including over 2.81 million Chinese and foreign books, more than 130,000 ancient books, over 330,000 periodicals, 180,000 microform items, 20,000 audiovisual materials, and digital resources totaling 402.96 TB.
